Boys Town
Today they grow up lawless and on the streets. Tomorrow they're on Death Row. Father Edward Flanagan vows to break the cycle, putting his life where his faith is and starting a boys' home that becomes a model of hope.

Spencer Tracy brings shinning inner strength to Flanagan in a performance that made him the first to win consecutive Best Actor Academy Awards® (Tom Hanks later matched that feat.) "There is no bad boy," Flanagan insists. But brash troublemaker Whitey Marsh (Mickey Rooney) puts the credo to the test. Nominated for five Academy Awards® including Best Picture, this compelling movie earned a Best Original Story Oscar®. And the Oscar® Tracy donated to Boys Town (the Academy provided him with another) remains on display there today.

A Christmas Carol (1938)
"May it haunt [my readers'] houses pleasantly," Charles Dickens wrote in the preface to his A Christmas Carol. This 1938 version offers one of that timeless work's most pleasant screen hauntings, bustling with a lavish back lot re-creation of Victorian London. Reginald Owen portrays holiday humbug Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser's miser who has a huge change of heart after spirits whisk him into the past, present and future.

Gene Lockhart, who like Owen would appear in well over 100 films, plays dutiful Bob Cratchit. There's a genuine air of family in the Cratchit household scenes, in part because Lockhart's real-life wife Kathleen plays Mrs. Cratchit. From sets to stars to story, this triumphant adaptation adds a glow to the season. Like Tiny Tim's benediction, it blesses us - every one.

Christmas In Connecticut
In her Smart Housekeeping column, Elizabeth Lane provides festive recipes and homemaking hints. But Elizabeth's got a secret: she needs a recipe to boil water. Elizabeth has no cooking skills, no Connecticut farm, no adoring hubby and no baby-makes-three as depicted in her column. She better get them. Because Elizabeth's boss has invited himself and a recently returned war hero to her home for Christmas.

Laughs, romance, holiday cheer: that's the recipe Barbara Stanwyck and a stellar company of Warner Bros. players follow in this amiable farce that was a huge hit with 1945 audiences and has become a perennial seasonal favorite. Have a very merry Christmas In Connecticut.
